We continue with the Public Programme at ERSTE Foundation with the book launch and presentation of the research and exhibition project The Second Explosion: the 1990s” about art production in Slovenia in the 1990s. Presentations will be held by the initiator of the project; artist and curator; director of the P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute in Ljubljana Tadej Pogačar and the photographer and Artist from Ljubljana Dejan Habicht.

The Second Explosion: the 1990s is a multi-year transdisciplinary research and education project, prepared and organized by P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute in collaboration with the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška and the educational program for young curators, INCUBATOR between 2014 and 2016.

It is a selective and subjective overview of the most important critical artistic practices of the 1990s that represent the major force in innovative processes. The initiators were interested in that segment of artistic production that is briefly described as the art after post-modernism. They had in mind new politicization, post-conceptual practices, active interventions into the social realm, dialogism, new models of self-organization, the shaping of new informal models of production and presentation, etc. The contemporary art of the 1990s in Slovenia is similar to that in the late 1960s, transgressive, introducing new forms of direct communication and dialogue with the public, participation and cooperation, focused on critical sociality, experimenting with different models of cultural institutions and self-organization, it is transdisciplinary. For their understanding is especially valuable the view of anthropologists who brought new logics and perspectives to the analysis and understanding of post-socialist societies, perspectives that were different than those recognized in “transitology”. With that they explicitly demonstrated the new forms of post-colonial dependency, in which the former socialist countries are trapped.

Tadej Pogačar is an artist, curator and educator based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He studied art history, ethnology and fine art at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, and graduated in painting from the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts, where he also completed his postgraduate studies. He is the founder and managing director of the P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute (established in 1998), a nonprofit cultural institution that operates the P74 Centre and Gallery and the KAPSULA bookshop/project space. He is interested in topics of informal economy, participatory urbanism, global sex work and human trafficking.

Dejan Habicht is a photographer, conceptual artist, and writer. He studied philosophy and ethnology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana (1978–1984) and received his diploma in ethnology (1984). From 1987 to 2000 he worked as a freelance photographer; since 2002 he has been a photographer at the Moderna galerija in Ljubljana
